Solar PV farm Khauta

Largest solar PV project of WKN Windcurrent to date

  • 4 separate solar PV facility applications
  • 629 ha of buildable area
  • total combined capacity of up to 300 MW
  • Battery Energy Storage Systems included in EIA Application

In June 2023, WKN Windcurrent has received Environmental Authorisations (EAs) for four solar PV applications close to Welkom in the Matjhabeng Local Municipality of the Free State Province of South Africa. The proposed Khauta Solar PV Facility Cluster covers approx. 629 ha of buildable area with solar plants up to eight meters high. The sunny region has almost perfect conditions for producing solar energy. All in all, the total nominal output of the cluster will amount to up to 300 megawatts, providing renewable electricity to large energy-intensive clients, and contributing to reducing the rolling black-outs that the South African grid is currently experiencing. With the help of battery energy storage systems, the produced energy will be stored and used when needed. The Khauta project will become the largest solar PV project of WKN Windcurrent to date.
