AALBORG & FRANKFURT, 26May 2023: Fraport AG, owner and operator of Frankfurt Airport, and Centrica Energy Trading, a leading European provider of energy management and optimisation services, have today announced the signing of a five-year renewable consumption PPA for wind power developed in Northern Germany by PNE AG.
Starting July 2023, Centrica will offtake power production from a recently commissioned onshore wind farm developed by PNE AG, providing Fraport AG with approximately 63 GWh of renewable electricity annually. Located in Northern Germany, the wind farm has a total capacity of 22MW, generating enough renewable electricity to annually displace approximately 24,300 tonnes[1] of CO2e.
The agreement is key to Fraport AGs renewable energy procurement strategy, enabling greater energy security, price certainty on energy consumption, alongside reductions in carbon emissions to be recorded against corporate sustainability and net zero targets. For PNE, this offers a good opportunity to deliver the clean energy generated by its wind farms to a leading airport business over an extended period -thereby contributing to climate-neutral aviation.
“Germany’s green transition is accelerating, and the focus on sustainability and demand for renewable energy solutions only continues to grow. We’re excited to have entered into this agreement with Fraport which underlines our commitment to delivering the green services and solutions needed to secure further growth and integration of renewable energy systems across Europe,” said Jan Gibbert, Head of German Origination at Centrica Energy Marketing & Trading.
“Fraport has set itself an ambitious climate goal. By 2045, we will reduce our carbon emissions to zero throughout the Group. The PPA with Centrica is an important pillar in our strategic planning. Even now, it is making a major contribution towards shifting our energy mix in the right direction,” said Felix Kreutel, Head of Real Estate and Energy at Fraport.
“We are delighted to be part of this deal between Centrica and Fraport with our wind project. It shows that corporate PPAs will play an important role in the success of the energy transition,”said Nils Kompe, Head of Energy Supply Services and PPA Management at PNE AG.
